Deep work
What it means
Deep work is a term popularised by Cal Newport for work done in distraction-free concentration that stretches your abilities: writing, designing, coding, studying difficult material. Its opposite is shallow work, the email, meetings and admin that fill most days. Deep work creates most of the value, but it needs long uninterrupted stretches that rarely happen by accident.
How to use it
Schedule it as a recurring block of 60 to 120 minutes in your best energy window, with notifications off and one clear goal. Start with a single block a day and defend it as you would a meeting with someone else.
Try it: what you write, what LifeOS does
- “every day at 8:30am deep work, notifications off” → A recurring daily block at 8:30 that appears in your plan, with a nudge when it begins.
