Glossary: planning, routine and focus terms explained

Buffer time

What it means

Buffer time is deliberately unscheduled time placed between commitments: ten minutes after a meeting, fifteen before you have to leave, half an hour at the end of a busy afternoon. Things run late, traffic happens and switching from one task to the next takes longer than we think. Without buffers, every small delay pushes back the rest of the day.

How to use it

Add a buffer after every block of an hour or more and before anything with a fixed start time. Know your real travel times and add a margin on top. If a buffer goes unused, it simply becomes a free break.
